I Am Super Woman

by Sharon Boling

I have a confession to make. I am really super woman. Yes, I can do it all! I can read a devotional book while vacuuming the floor, I can pack 2 lunches while eating my healthy whole wheat toast and banana sandwich breakfast, and help with homework while doing 3 loads of laundry. Oh, and did I mention today was guitar lessons and cheerleading practice? And that’s not all! I can even make a homemade from scratch meal to take to another family, make a completely different one for my family (since they would never eat a casserole), and then teach a class of nineteen 3 and 4 year olds. All in one day! Does this sound familiar? Are you a super woman too?

But then of course, that day came like we all know it does. One of the kids was sick, my husband was out of town, and the car broke down (well, actually, I ran out of gas). I was supposed to volunteer at the school and pick up a gift for a birthday party the next day. We were also out of milk. I yelled at my daughter for no reason other than the fact I was frustrated, and I let both children eat frozen pizza for dinner for the 3rd time that week. When I finally got ready for bed that night, I prayed to God and said, “Why do I feel like such a failure? Why is everything going wrong?”

God reminded me of a scripture that has been one of my favorites for a long time. It’s 2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’.” The NLT says, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”

It seems like every day I wake up thinking I can do it all on my own and nothing can get me down. But when things go wrong and I fail, God’s Word reminds me that He is there to help me and carry me through. Did I fall short? I have His grace. Could I not do it on my own? I have His power. In fact, if I can just let go and ADMIT that I am human (and not super woman), his power is PERFECT because I am admitting to him my weakness. What could be better than perfect?

Quotes for Setting Goals

People who win at finances have written goals

Goals are simply what you are aiming at. Zig Ziglar said, “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.”

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible. - Anthony Robbins

Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement. - Brian Tracy

Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.
- Fitzhugh Dodson

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. - Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)

Goals are dreams with deadlines. - Diana Scharf Hunt

You must have long-term goals to keep you from being frustrated by short-term failures. - Charles C. Noble

Short-term financial goals are those you want to save for or purchase within the next month or next couple of years.

Long-term financial goals are those which you plan on fulfilling at least 3 years from now. These types of goals can include debt elimination, retirement, college funding, etc.

Now, decide how many financial goals you can realistically meet in specific amounts of time.

New Year’s Resolutions

by Tina Bruno

“Happy New Year!” Have we all heard that enough the last few months? I know I certainly have! It’s a wonderful sentiment, but did you cringe slightly each time you heard it? Why? Did it remind you of new beginnings and that dreaded word “resolutions”? Do you know where this came from? Let’s analyze the word:

Resolutions: Root word, resolve from the Latin resolvere. According to Merriam-Webster, it’s the act or process of resolving, as:a) the act of analyzing a complex notion into simpler ones.b) the act of answering.c) the act of determining. For our purposes, I believe the last definition fits the best, determining. If you look for synonyms to the word resolution, determination is one of them. So what is your determination for the new year? Determined not to have any? That is a response many have had!!

How about a resolution, a determination, to be happy? Better yet, how about content? Contentment is being at peace in your current situation, no matter what. Phillipians 4:10-4:13 says “I’m glad in God, far happier than you would ever guess - happy that you’re again showing such strong concern for me. Not that you ever quit praying and thinking about me. You just had no chance to show it. Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.” (The Message)Or how about what Hebrews 13:5-6 says; “Don’t be obsessed with getting more material things. Be relaxed with what you have. Since God assured us, ‘I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,’ we can boldly quote, God is there, ready to help, I’m fearless no matter what. Who or what can get to me?” With promises like this, a new year’s resolution to be content should be first on our list. Remember, content where we are. We don’t need to be thinner, stronger, richer. Contentment in who we are in Christ will get us where we need to be. Happy New Year!!!

Our Body, God’s Temple

by Susan Lucas

Do you not know that you body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit who lives within you, whom you have received (as a Gift) from God? You are not your own, you were bought with a price (purchased with preciousness and paid for, made His own). So then, honor God and bring glory to Him in your body. I Corinthians 6:19-20

Wow, what loaded Bible verses! In today’s technology, rush hour traffic, instant everything, how do we treat the vessel God gave to us to use to His glory? Obviously, we are instructed by Him to take meticulous care of our bodies. We are to treat our physical body with respect in order to use our gift to honor Him.

Nothing about the Christian life is supposed to work that way, God never promises us that. The same holds true with our physical health. Becoming healthier takes a desire to change and a willingness to let go of bad habits. With God’s help, we can become a testament to His power. His power can change us inside and out so that others take notice. We just have to be wiling to improve. With God nothing is impossible!
